Effective Study Method

The flashcard learning method is a memorization and knowledge retention technique using two-sided cards, with a prompt on one side and an answer on the other, to do active recall and spaced repetition.

How does this work?

Flashcards are designed to force active recall, which is the process by which we retrieve a memory. Seeing a term, or a term and image, and then actively attempting to remember the meaning helps to move it from short-term to long-term memory.

How to make one?

To make flashcards, choose between a traditional method by writing on index cards or a digital one using apps like Quizlet or design tools like Canva. Gather your study material, place a key term or question on the front of the card, and write its definition or answer on the back. Add images or notes for context, keep the information concise, and then use the cards for studying.

Traditional

  2. Prepare study material
  3. write the front with question, keyword, or concept
  4. Write the back with definition, answer or explanation
  5. Keep it simple
  6. Add context to include extra details

Digital

  1. Choose a platform
  2. Find or create a template
  3. Enter content
  4. Add visuals
  5. Customize and organize
  6. Use features
